SUSTAINABILITY
Our solar-powered factories transform local partnerships into premium products, while our circular economy approach turns waste into valuable by-products. Through inclusive sourcing and skills development in Kakuma, we create pathways to dignified work for refugee and host communities. Because enhancing lives means protecting the environment that sustains them—and investing in the people who shape a better future.
At HACO Industries,
Sustainability is a
Business Imperative
We are deliberate in generating positive social, environmental and economic impacts to planet, communities and stakeholders. Every decision we make should help people thrive, protect our planet, and drive progress that lasts.
Our Four Pillars
Our sustainability work is built around four key pillars — turning our purpose into practical impact, one community, one partnership, and one innovation at a time.
Education & Skills Development
Health
Environment & Climate Change
SME & Agri-Business Empowerment
Our alignment with the UN global pact and SDG's
As proud members of the UN Global Compact, we align our actions with the anchoring universal principles set within the themes of human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption. Our efforts also advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially in areas of health, education, decent work, climate action, and partnerships for change.

Elevate Africa Programme
Empowering refugee and host communities through sustainable skills training
Transforming Lives in Kakuma
HACO Industries Kenya Limited, in partnership with UNHCR and Nemlon Training Institute, successfully launched the ElevateAfrica program in Kakuma.
The program empowers women from refugee and host communities to turn haircare skills into sustainable businesses. The launch included the handover of the first Haco Kwa Mtaa model container, a community hub for training, mentorship, and micro-enterprise incubation.
Women gained hands-on experience with HACO's haircare brands, Miadi and Ashanti-Q, alongside business mentorship and access to market opportunities.
Mary-Ann Musangi, HACO Industries MD:
"ElevateAfrica is a continuous partnership aimed to move women from training to transformation, helping them translate skills into sustainable livelihoods and independence."
The initiative aligns with Kenya's Vision 2030, the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, advancing gender equality, economic growth, and partnerships for impact.

Empowering Students Across East Africa
HACO's HACO Elevate Initiative - TVET program has successfully trained students across Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda, equipping them with the skills and tools to excel in the haircare industry.
Over the course of the programme, 270 students (90 per country) completed the training. HACO continues to track their impact, including successful business launches, continued use of HACO products, and financial and social outcomes.
This initiative demonstrates how vocational training, combined with practical tools and mentorship, can turn skills into sustainable livelihoods and strengthen local economies.
Clean Hands, Bright Futures
Partnering with Rotary District 9212 to build healthier school environments — one wash at a time.
HACO Industries & Rotary District 9212
HACO Industries is proud to partner with Rotary District 9212 on the Clean Hands, Bright Futures Programme at St. Mary Primary School, Karen — an initiative dedicated to instilling hygiene habits that protect children's health and unlock their potential.
Through its brand Amara, HACO is supplying antibacterial handwash to reinforce proper handwashing routines across the school environment. This contribution reflects our broader commitment to improving everyday wellbeing through practical, community-centred action.
We believe that simple habits — such as handwashing — carry a lasting impact on children's health, learning, and life outcomes. By working alongside partners who share this vision, we are helping build healthier schools and contributing to brighter futures for the next generation.
"Because clean hands today build brighter futures tomorrow."

ProGreen Partnership
HACO Industries has partnered with ProGreen Innovations to establish a closed-loop waste management system, converting non-recyclable plastic waste into Eco-fuel — a sustainable alternative to conventional fossil fuels used in our manufacturing operations. The collaboration also includes repurposing metallic and plastic drums to transform avocado waste into eco-friendly solid fuel, supporting biochar production while minimizing waste and reducing deforestation.
This initiative has created over 20 direct and 200 indirect jobs, diverted significant waste from landfills, and lowered greenhouse gas emissions — demonstrating how shared purpose can drive environmental transformation, circularity, and inclusive growth.
HACO Take Back Scheme
HACO Industries is driving responsible consumption and sustainable waste management through the HACO Take Back Scheme, a flagship initiative supporting the Extended Producer Responsibility Regulations 2024 under the Sustainable Waste Management Act, 2022.
- Murang'a County Partnership: Establishment of waste collection cages, resident sensitization, and conversion of collected dry waste to Eco-fuel
- Miadi Take Back — Kenyatta Market: Collecting and recycling plastic waste from post-consumer haircare packaging at one of Kenya's largest hair markets
Green Learning Initiative
HACO Industries drives the Green Learning Initiative, a sustainability-focused program empowering environmentally conscious leaders at two educational levels:
- Beyond Dreams — Secondary Schools: Mentorship sessions, fruit tree planting (200 trees per school) and discussions on sustainable living
- Weka Tint — Primary Schools: Environmental education with recycling of legacy HACO school rulers and tree planting initiatives
Renewable Energy
HACO Industries embraces renewable energy to drive sustainable manufacturing, reduce our carbon footprint, and contribute meaningfully to combating climate change. Our two factories — HPC and Plastics — are powered by solar energy during the day, providing a cost-effective alternative to grid electricity.
The Plastics Factory is further equipped with solar tunnels, enabling natural daylight within production areas and reducing reliance on conventional lighting. Together, these solar installations offset approximately 43% of our Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions.
In-house Recycling Initiatives
Being a manufacturer of plastic packaging, HACO fully understands the responsibility that goes into proper production models in order to mitigate the impact of plastic infusion into the environment. HACO has installed online grinders into its equipment to allow real-time recycling of any plastic packaging waste produced within the factory. These wastes are actively reintegrated into new packaging — allowing generation of components encompassing about 21% recycled material.
WEEE Centre Partnership
HACO Industries formalized a partnership with WEEE Centre to ensure the responsible disposal, recycling, and repurposing of electronic equipment used in our manufacturing operations. As part of this initiative, HACO donates electronics which WEEE Centre refurbishes and donates to communities in need — extending the life of devices while creating social impact.
"Giving electronics a second life — empowering communities while protecting the planet."
The Chasing Zero Initiative
Primarily HACO has undertaken to create impact through its award-winning Chasing Zero Initiative poised to realize Zero Waste at sourcing, production and post-consumer levels, Zero Harm within our workforce, environment and consumers and undertake an emissions accounting journey while simultaneously decarbonizing in order to realize Net Zero emissions in our products and processes.

Through enterprise, education, and inclusive economic growth
HACO values its supply chain as the backbone of our business operations. We are continuously building stronger communities through enterprise — engaging over 30,000 farmers through their aggregator SMEs to enable them access to proper agribusiness education, skills and resources that enable meaningful production.
Distributed across the country, HACO is keen to keep the quality of natural oils provided well above market standards so as to ensure meaningful ease of trade between the farmers, the aggregators, and any other prospective market for these oils.
